M, Tu, Th Schedule

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays will be spent in large and small group rehearsals and music activities.  In these sessions we will train your students in the basics of music and performance in traditional as well as unique fun sessions.

8:30 am - Stomp, Clap and Shout

Music is all around us in our everyday lives.  In this fun and interactive large group session we experience and learn how we can be totally immersed in a performance.  The new and custom designed activity we do each week will be a jumping off point for other classes and activities during the week.

9 am - Morning Basics Rotations

Each camper will go through designated and age/skill appropriate Basic Musicianship groups designed around that weeks lessons and repertoire to be learned.  3 20 minute sessions.

10 am - Snack and Bathroom Break

We encourage our campers to use the restroom when we offer opportunities so that their instructional time is maximized.  This is also a good preperation for further success in other future musical endeavors teaching responsibility and timeliness.

10:30 am - Repertoire Rehearsal

Every camper will be assigned on their first week to a performance ensemble.  Using handbells as our instrument of choice we will work on technique, basic musicianship, performance excellence, and do it in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

11:30 am - Large Group Music/Learning Games

You have to have time to laugh and play. We capture these moments to do that, and also reinforce the lessons learned that morning.

Noon - Lunch

12:30 pm - Specialized Focus Groups

These rotational sessions allow campers to discover other aspects of music such as: conducting, composition, score study, technique skills, percussion, and many other topics.

2 pm - Snack, Restrooms, Outdoor or Indoor Activities

2:45 pm - Final Repertoire Rehearsal

In this session, they put everything together from the days activities while preparing for our future performance opportunites.

3:15 pm - Bathroom and Water Break

3:30 pm - Large Group games and final activities

After an intense day of learning, experiences and training it's time to blow off some steam and enjoy guided activities with our fellow musicians.

Most weeks we will have guest artists come and perform for our students from different musical traditions and genres as well as local composers, teachers and arrangers.

Water Activities

Jump in the pool, splash a counselor, or jump off the diving board. The fun in the sun never stops whenever water is part of a camp day. Quality lifeguards and instructors insure a safe and fun environment. Weekly pool trips to a large semi-public pool are scheduled for all age groups.

Pool Safety

Banglewood staff takes pool safety very seriously. We understand the potential risk with water activities and prepare our staff to provide quality supervision and care. All children must complete a swim test administered by either our trained lifeguard or pool lifeguards before being permitted to swim in deeper water. Children will swim in water depth appropriate to their size and swimming ability.

Children who have not learned to swim will stay in either the fenced in 1-foot pool or in the 3-foot pool while wearing a life jacket.

Parents, please provide your own puddle jumpers. Inflatable floats are not accepted at the pool.

Field Trips

We believe in the value of engaging children's minds, bodies, and hearts with activities and trips away from campus.  All of our field trips will have some musical focus varying from manufacturing to history to performance.

Field trips for the summer may include:

  • Wolf Trap Theater in the Woods
  • Altria Musical Theater in Richmond
  • US Airforce Summer Concert Series
  • Library of Congress Music Library
  • Richmond Children's Museum Music Lab
  • University of Mary Washington Concert Series
  • Sunderlin Bell Foundry
  • Strathmore Kids' Concert Series

These field trips are included in registration. There are no additional costs to parents and campers other than money for additional arcade credits or to spend at a gift shop. We offer two trips per week (pool and one above trip).

Field trips pending COVID-19 restrictions.

Field trips may be limited during the last week of camp for end of the summer performances.

During the last day of camp, there's a performance for parents
